SUNRISE Summit 2026 in Sweden

SUNRISE community met at Summit 2026 in Västerås, Sweden. Rectors, students, staff of the nine universities and regional representatives came together at Mälardalen University.

The second SUNRISE Alliance Community Summit Meeting took place in Västerås, Sweden, from 19 to 21 May 2026.

Not far from Stockholm, in the intricate fjords of southern Sweden, the delegates of the partners of the SUNRISE Alliance were welcomed to the city of Västerås at the campus of Mälardalen University.  All partner universities were represented: Technische Universität Ilmenau, Universitat Politécnica de Viana do Castelo, Université de Technologie de Compiègne, European University Cyprus, University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszów, “Džemal Bijedić” University of Mostar, and Università Politecnica delle Marche, with several representatives from the universities—students included—as well as from regional authorities and development agencies.

A large delegation of academic and administrative staff from the 鶹-Bolzano also attended, in particular those involved in WP2 and WP5. These work packages focus respectively on the creation of a shared campus and institutional collaboration platforms, and on strengthening the connection between university activities and the local territory. The latter placed particular emphasis on lifelong learning and innovative forms of teaching that respond to the needs of local stakeholders, especially businesses.

On this occasion, a meeting of the Alliance’s rectors was also held, during which short-term priorities for the partners were discussed. The key focus was on Joint Degrees, considered a common and essential objective in order to submit a proposal to the European Commission for a second phase of the Alliance.

Representatives of the SUNRISE student community also met within the Student Council. For unibz, Sedin Tatar, the outgoing SUNRISE Alliance student representative, participated and presented the idea of an online chess tournament that will soon be open to the entire student community—and beyond—of the partner universities.

Overall, the meeting provided an opportunity to take stock of the Alliance’s activities, exchange views, identify shared challenges across the respective territories, meet or reconnect in person, and strengthen both institutional and personal ties, which are essential for the inter-university cooperation that the Alliance is building.

During the same days, the Blended Intensive Programme “Distributed Software Development,” organized by Mälardalen University, also took place. Several students from the Alliance universities participated, proposing concrete project ideas to address real-world problems. Representing the 鶹-Bolzano were two students from the Faculty of Engineering, Ismail Hashraf Hossam and Brice Tatong. Together with their group, they presented their project idea to the audience, proposing the creation of an integrated web portal gathering all opportunities offered to students by the Alliance partners.
