ALPS is a research facility whose primary objective is to document and study the sound dimension of spoken language, both in its production and perception. The sounds of the world's languages can be analysed as sound waves, or we can observe the movements we get to produce them. In the laboratory, we are interested in both of these perspectives, using a variety of data collection methods: audio recordings of the voice, Ultrasound Tongue Imaging data, perceptual tests, electrical signals of vocal fold activity, etc.
Our areas of research are the documentation of sound systems (Ladin, Italian, German, German dialects, Sardinian), bilingual speech, language acquisition, and speech technologies. ALPS's activity also has a significant impact outside of phonetic research, with applications in education, clinical practice, and technology.
